Sensitive restorations require a tender and delicate eye, demanding both full attention and unwavering respect for the subject at the end. Following the Iraq invasion in the 1990s, the historical and one-of-a-kind Al Salam Palace suffered substantial damages. Now, after steadfast efforts, the restoration has ensured that visitors will be able to live through the history of Kuwait’s 15 rulers, to experience all the glory and majesty of Kuwaiti culture for themselves.
SSH collaborated with MB Studio for interior design on the restoration, drawing upon Studio MB for exhibit designs within the museum. In the palace itself, despite the pronounced nature of the restorations, a true adherence to the original and classical styles throughout the space reigned supreme, with contemporary elements and choices only when fitting for functionality.
Outside, the Palace Garden is a flawless encapsulation of the beauty once favored. In honor of this effort, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait at the time, reopened Al Salam Palace in October 2019, with a reception of Heads of State in the Rotunda, which leads faithfully into the palace rooms and galleries.
